No matter your sexual identity – gay, lesbian, bisexual or something in between – same-sex relationships can be tricky. You may still be exploring your sexual identity, have different expectations from others than with straight partners and have to deal with more (unasked) opinions from others. But no matter what, being in a relationship with someone who understands you, supports you and loves you unconditionally is an incredibly positive experience.
How can you ensure that your same-sex relationship is as healthy and fulfilling as possible? To assist you, we’ve asked 29+ LGBTQ couples and a throuple to share their best advice for successful same-sex dating!
Begin a Conversation With the Appropriate Questions
Asking a question when first engaging someone is always a wise idea. Not only does it break the ice, but it can give you insight into their likes and dislikes in life. Furthermore, asking someone a question shows that you’re interested in getting to know more about them and want to understand what drives them most.
Be Specific About Your Relationship Goals
It can be tempting to be overly open when talking with a new potential date, especially since the same-sex dating scene is somewhat more exclusive than that of the straight world. But if you don’t express exactly what you expect out of the relationship from the start, there could be plenty of confusion and misunderstandings down the line.
Talk About Your Hobbies
One of the best ways to maintain a conversation is by discussing topics both of you are passionate about. This helps create an even stronger connection, making for an enjoyable date experience.
Making Your Date Pay You
If you’re truly infatuated with someone, taking her out on a date is an ideal way to express your affections. It doesn’t need to be extravagant, but it will definitely leave a lasting impression. Furthermore, if everything goes smoothly on this first date, chances are good that they’ll likely pay you back on the following one too!
Be Honest About Your Selflessness
If a lesbian experiences financial difficulty, she might not have much in the way of emotional support. However, it’s essential to demonstrate your concern and be there for her when needed. Doing this helps build trust between both of you and creates an encouraging atmosphere for the future.
Respect Your Exs
When dating, be honest about how your feelings are developing. Avoid falling in love with someone who may not be the ideal match for you; especially if you’re just getting to know her and don’t yet have enough experience to determine whether she’s suitable or not. This goes especially for girls when first starting out together as partners as it allows both of you time to develop trusting relationships and establish whether one feels right for the other or not.
Be Fair With Your Exs
If your relationship with your ex was difficult, it may be tempting to start dating them again. However, never repeat the same issues that caused them to end the first time around.
